Google Business Profile — previously called Google My Business — is the single most powerful free tool available to any Algarve local business. Used properly, it puts you in front of customers at the exact moment they are searching for what you offer, in the exact location they are searching from.
Most Algarve businesses use it badly, or not at all. This guide covers everything you need to know to set it up correctly and keep it working in 2026.
What Google Business Profile actually is
When you search for "restaurant Faro" or "plumber Portimão" on Google, the results that appear in a box with a map and three business listings above the regular search results are Google Business Profile listings. This is called the local map pack, and appearing in it is the highest-value real estate in local search.
Your Google Business Profile controls what appears in that map pack — your business name, address, phone number, opening hours, photos, reviews, services, and a link to your website. It also controls whether you appear at all.
Step 1: Claim and verify your profile
Go to business.google.com and search for your business. If a listing already exists, claim it. If not, create one. Either way, you will need to verify that you own the business. Google offers several verification methods:
- Postcard — Google sends a physical card to your business address with a verification code. Takes 5 to 14 days.
- Phone — Available for some businesses. Google calls your listed number with a code.
- Video — Google may ask you to record a short video showing your business location and signage.
- Instant — Available for some established businesses where Google can verify automatically.
Do not skip verification. An unverified listing has limited features and ranks significantly lower than a verified one.
Step 2: Complete every field
Google rewards completeness. A profile with every field filled in consistently outranks one that is partially complete. Here is what to prioritise:
Business name
Use your exact legal trading name. Do not add keywords to your business name (e.g. "Costa Verde Restaurant — Best Food in Lagos"). This violates Google's guidelines and can result in your listing being suspended.
Primary category
This is the most important ranking field. Choose the most specific category that accurately describes your primary business. If you are a Portuguese restaurant, choose "Portuguese Restaurant" not just "Restaurant". If you are a physiotherapist, choose "Physical Therapist" not "Health Clinic". Check what category your top-ranking local competitors use.
Address and service area
Use your exact address formatted exactly as it appears on official documents. If you serve customers at their location rather than at a fixed address — trades, mobile services — you can hide your address and set a service area instead.
Phone number
Use a local Portuguese number. International or premium rate numbers raise trust concerns. Make sure it is identical on your Google profile, your website, and every other online directory.
Website
Link to your homepage. If you do not have a professional website, this is the most important gap to fix. Google uses your website as a quality signal for your map ranking. A slow or absent website directly suppresses your Google Maps visibility.
Opening hours
Set accurate regular hours and use the special hours feature for public holidays and seasonal variations. Incorrect opening hours are one of the most common reasons for negative reviews and lost customers. Update them whenever they change.
Description
Write a 250-word description that naturally includes your primary service and location. Do not keyword-stuff. Write for a human reader who wants to know what your business does and why to choose you. Include your town and the Algarve naturally in the text.
Step 3: Add professional photos
Google Business Profiles with photos receive significantly more clicks than those without. For most Algarve businesses, the minimum is:
- Exterior photo — the front of your business so customers can find it
- Interior photos — at least 3 showing the atmosphere
- Product or service photos — food dishes, treatment rooms, completed work, products
- Team photo — humanises the business and builds trust
Use real photos, not stock images. Google can detect stock photos and they perform poorly with customers. If you need professional photography, we offer photography sourcing as an add-on for €99.
Step 4: Collect and manage reviews
Reviews are the most powerful ranking and conversion factor in your Google Business Profile. More reviews, more recent reviews, and an active response pattern all contribute to higher local rankings and higher customer trust.
How to get more reviews
The most effective method is a direct verbal ask at the moment of highest satisfaction. For a restaurant: at the end of a great meal before the customer leaves. For a trade: immediately after completing a job the client is happy with. For a clinic: at the end of a successful appointment.
Follow up with a direct link to your Google review page. You can create a short link from your Google Business Profile dashboard. A QR code on your receipt, business card, or thank-you card that goes directly to your review page removes all friction from the process.
How to respond to reviews
Respond to every review — positive and negative. For positive reviews, thank the customer personally and mention something specific about their visit if possible. For negative reviews, respond calmly, acknowledge their experience, and offer to resolve it offline. Never argue, never be defensive, and never copy-paste the same response to every review.
Google uses review response rate as a signal. Businesses that respond to reviews rank higher than those that do not.
Step 5: Post regularly
Google Business Profile posts appear in your listing and signal to Google that your business is active. Post at least twice a month. Ideas for Algarve businesses:
- Seasonal menu changes or new dishes (restaurants)
- Special offers or packages (accommodation)
- Completed project photos (trades)
- New service additions (clinics and salons)
- Local events you are participating in
- Seasonal opening hours changes
Step 6: Use the Q and A feature
Google Business Profile has a public Q and A section where anyone can ask and answer questions about your business. Many business owners do not know this exists. The risk is that incorrect information gets posted by strangers and appears on your listing.
Proactively add the most common questions customers ask you and answer them yourself. This controls the information shown and improves the customer experience for people considering your business.
What to monitor each month
Google Business Profile provides insights showing how many people found your listing, what searches they used, how many clicked through to your website, and how many called or asked for directions. Review these monthly to understand what is working and what searches are driving your visibility.
