Why Your Algarve Business Doesn't Appear on Google Maps

📅 July 2026 🕑 9 min read 📍 Algarve, Portugal

If your business is not showing up on Google Maps in the Algarve, here are the exact reasons why and what to fix first. A practical guide for local business owners.

If you search for your business category in your Algarve town and your business does not appear in the map results, you are losing customers every day. This is one of the most common and fixable problems we see with local businesses across Faro, Lagos, Albufeira, Portimão, and the wider Algarve.

Here are the most common reasons why, and exactly what to do about each one.

Reason 1: Your Google Business Profile is not claimed

Google often creates a basic listing for businesses automatically based on information from the web. If you have not claimed this listing, you have no control over what it shows — and Google will rank it lower than claimed, actively managed profiles.

Fix: Go to Google Business Profile (business.google.com), search for your business, and claim it. Google will verify you via postcard, phone, or video. This takes a few days but is the single most important first step.

Reason 2: Your profile is incomplete

Google rewards completeness. A profile with every field filled in — business category, description, opening hours, phone number, website, services, photos — consistently outranks one with half the fields empty. Most Algarve businesses claim their profile and fill in the minimum, leaving significant ranking potential on the table.

Fix: Fill in every field. Add at least 10 photos — exterior, interior, products or dishes, team if appropriate. Write a description that naturally includes the service and location. List every service you offer. Add your opening hours including seasonal variations.

Reason 3: Your business information is inconsistent

Google cross-references your business information across the web. If your phone number on Google is different from your phone number on your website, your address is formatted differently on TripAdvisor, and your business name has slight variations across directories, Google loses confidence in your listing and ranks it lower.

This is called NAP consistency — Name, Address, Phone. It must be identical everywhere.

Fix: Audit every place your business appears online and make your name, address, and phone number identical across all of them. Google, your website, TripAdvisor, Facebook, local directories, and any other listings.

Reason 4: You have few or no reviews

Google uses reviews as a primary quality signal for local ranking. A business with 50 reviews will almost always outrank an identical business with 5 reviews, all else being equal. For Algarve tourism businesses this is particularly important because tourists are reviewing businesses constantly — and if your competitors are collecting those reviews and you are not, the ranking gap widens over time.

Fix: Ask every satisfied customer for a Google review. The most effective method is a direct verbal ask at the point of highest satisfaction — at the end of a meal, after a service, when a job is complete — followed by a simple QR code or link that takes them directly to your review page. Do not wait for reviews to happen naturally. They will not come fast enough.

Reason 5: Your website is slow or not mobile-friendly

Google Business Profile ranking is influenced by the quality of your linked website. A slow, non-mobile-friendly website signals a low-quality business and suppresses your map ranking. This surprises many business owners who think of their website and their Google Maps listing as separate things. They are connected.

Fix: Run your website through SiteMedic to get an instant score. If your site scores below 60, improving it will have a direct positive effect on your Google Maps ranking.

Reason 6: You are not in the right primary category

Google Business Profile allows you to select a primary category and multiple secondary categories. The primary category is the most important ranking signal for what searches you appear in. Many businesses choose a category that is too broad or slightly wrong, which means they appear in the wrong searches or rank lower in the right ones.

Fix: Check what category your top-ranking local competitors are using. Use the most specific primary category that accurately describes your business. A Portuguese restaurant should be "Portuguese Restaurant", not just "Restaurant". A physiotherapy clinic should be "Physical Therapist", not "Health Clinic".

Reason 7: You are not posting regularly

Google Business Profile allows you to post updates — offers, events, new products, news. Businesses that post regularly signal to Google that they are active. Active businesses rank higher than dormant ones. Most Algarve businesses set up their profile and never post again.

Fix: Post at least twice a month. A new dish, a seasonal offer, an event, a behind-the-scenes photo. It does not need to be elaborate. Consistent activity is what matters.
